Nextel Announces On-line Paging Service Provided By Wireless Services

First Wireless Telephone Messaging Service to Offer Delivery Confirmation

McLEAN, VA, August 12, 1998 - Nextel Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NXTL) announced today that it selected Wireless Services Corporation to provide wireless on-line paging capabilities to more than two million Nextel customers nationwide.

Wireless Services’ technology provides Nextel U.S. customers with the ability to receive online pages sent via email or Nextel’s web site and delivered directly to their Nextel phones. Wireless Services provides an Internet messaging gateway technology that allows the delivery of text messages to Nextel phones from any personal computer with access to the Internet. Messages can be sent to any Nextel customer by addressing the message to their 10-digit Nextel telephone number, typing the message in the message box and clicking the send button. In addition, the Nextel National Network with the Wireless Services gateway provides the only wireless telephone network with message delivery status, a feature that allows users to know when their messages were sent to Nextel phones.

From the Nextel web site’s on-line paging center, the sender has three options to confirm message delivery:

"Using technology from Wireless Services allows us to provide more options to our customers," said Tom Kelly, Nextel’s chief marketing officer. "On-line messaging with delivery confirmation provides our customers with another powerful communication tool, to complement our Nextel Direct Connectsm service."

"Nextel is an ideal company to utilize our services because of its targeted business customer base and technology that provides delivery confirmation," said Steve Wood, president and chief executive officer of Wireless Services Corporation. "With our wireless technology, Nextel meets the growing demands of business professionals who need an on-line paging service. Now anyone with Internet access can deliver messages to Nextel phones, plus people have the option to track messages so they know when their messages were received."
