XYPOINT Corp. and Wireless Service Corp. Announce Partnership to Link
Agreement will enable customers to conduct secure e-business transactions on their digital wireless phones
Seattle, WA July 12, 1999 - XYPOINT Corp. and Wireless Services Corp. today announced the two companies have formed a technology alliance to provide e-businesses with a robust suite of secure services linking today’s wireless phones with the Internet.
The privately held companies, led by former McCaw Cellular and Microsoft executives, are developing a secure technology platform called WebWireless, which will enable consumers to conduct high-value transactions through Internet-based businesses. The new platform will enable the consumer to monitor, control, and respond to Web content, events and transactions such as bidding in an on-line auction or buying and selling stocks. The services will be available by Q4, 99.
Based upon the customer’s directives WebWireless sends a text message to the customer’s phone, alerting them to an important event and providing breif instructions. By simply pressing a single button on their digital phone, the customer is presented with a range of voice options and is able to execute an order or transaction or receive more information. The customer receives immediate voice and/or data confirmation of the transaction.
"WebWireless provides its customers with the unprecedented ability to conduct e-business transactions in real time using their digital wireless phones," said Steve Wood, president and CEO of Wireless Services Corp. "People can’t afford to be tethered to a computer all day to receive critical business information; consumers want to take important Web capabilities with them wherever they go -- whether it’s stock trades, accessing e-mail or buying goods and services. We teamed with XYPOINT because together we can provide the best, most selective and secure offering to content providers and the customers who visit their sites."
"Our applications give wireless phone customers the power to actually execute important Web transactions when they are away from their PC," said Ken Arneson, president and CEO of XYPOINT. "We understand that the consumer has a very low tolerance for "spam" such as news, weather and sports found on other mobile data devices. And, after years in the wireless industry, we also know that security has to be guaranteed."
"In the next few months, we are developing an array of new Internet applications for mobile people that we believe will revolutionize how consumers use today’s digital phones," said Arneson.
Several wireless manufacturers, including Nokia and Ericsson, are developing Wireless Access Protocol (WAP) - enabled handsets, which connect "smart" phones and other digital devices to the Internet. WebWireless (patent-pending) enables authenticated Web transactions using both WAP and existing digital wireless phones and does not require new handsets, software, or hardware modifications.
