Corporate AirNote Customizations

Overview

There are many ways that AirNote can be tailored to the specific needs of companies with multiple subscribers. This document covers the most common requests that Wireless Services receives for AirNote customization and is intended to provide help to email system administrators and MIS directors.

Security

The standard AirNote service receives messages from the Internet, filters and process them, and sends them out as appropriate to wireless devices, other email addresses, or fax machines. One common concern of AirNote subscribers is the security of their messages. This concern may be addressed on several levels.

Messages Resident on AirNote Servers

AirNote normally stores messages for up to 15 days, so they are available for subscribers to view and retrieve from the AirNote web site. Upon request, AirNote can be configured to delete all messages immediately after processing them. This can be done for entire organizations if desired. The result is that AirNote will receive messages, process and filter them according to the subscriber's profile, forward them as requested, then immediately remove them from the server.

Internet Tunnel Routers

Messages normally are delivered to AirNote via the Internet. Companies concerned about the security of the Internet may install a private tunneling connection between their computer facility and Wireless Services. This requires the purchase of two tunnel routers, and installation, at an approximate cost of $10,000. One tunnel router encrypts all of the messages from the company's network and sends it to the other router at Wireless Services where it is decrypted and processed. Anyone intercepting the messages from the public Internet will not be able to decrypt them.

Private Network Connections

The second way to ensure message security is to bypass the Internet entirely by installing a private telecommunications line between the company's network and Wireless Services. The result is a secure and reliable conduit for messages. The network connection may be via a dedicated leased line or a frame relay. The leased line will typically cost between $1,000 and $2,000 per month, plus the initial installation cost. Wireless Services will provide a turnkey service for private network installations upon request.

On-Site Servers

Upon request, Wireless Services will provide quotes for installing and operating all or portions of the AirNote servers at the customer's facilities. The result is that all messages are processed within the customer's facility, and only the forwarded messages go outside. The cost of this alternative is highly variable depending on the customer's requirements and network details, but generally the installation cost will be approximately $50,000.

Reliability

The other drawback of the Internet besides lack of security is its uncertain reliability. Internet outages are uncommon, but they do happen. Over a long period of time it is likely that there will be Internet interruptions that would delay the delivery of messages to AirNote for several minutes up to several hours. The solution is to install a private network connection to Wireless Services, as described above. The Internet can be used for backup delivery in the event that the private network connection goes down - an event much less likely than Internet outages.

Intranet Integration

Most large organizations now have an Intranet for internal communications. AirNote functionality may be added to existing Intranets. This may include information on wireless messaging, help or tutorials, on-line ordering or purchase requests, on-line support and service, and the ability to customize your AirNote profile. Wireless Services will provide quotes for Intranet development and integration upon request.
